Picture: Dreamy morning ~ surfers, mountains and the sea at Cerritos Beach, El Pescadero, Baja California, Mexico
I woke up this morning with this song on my mind: “Dream On” by Aerosmith
Does this ever happen to you? You wake up with lyrics in your head? This happens to me a lot! I say that I DJ my dreams or my unconscious self is giving me answers to my dreams even when I don’t have any recall to them. I love that I can look up the lyrics to see the exact words to the particular song. Then I can feel into how the words are relating to my current life situation. There is usually a link.
I believe that Music is important to our existence. Whether there are lyrics or melodies they speak to the deeper parts of ourselves.
I am in Mexico and don’t speak Spanish (which is actually something I plan on learning) but whenever I hear songs here they feel dreamy and romantic. I experience this music as passionate and dramatic. Of course I have no idea what the words are so I can have my own interpretation. This is why at times I really enjoy listening to music without lyrics. I can then drift off into the melody and have my own thoughts without the interpretive expression of the words. I have the opportunity to translate it for myself through my own lens of experience and present moment pondering. I think when we know the words and their prescribed meaning we will automatically attach a story, experience, memory to the words and it can change the experience. What do you think?
Traveling affords me the opportunity to reflect more deeply on what my life is about.
Do you have specific ways of reflecting on your life? What are they?
Do you do particular things to quiet your mind and just simply reflect?
Do you like being active in order to be alone with your thoughts while doing something?
Do you like to be in groups to unwind and loosen up?
There are no absolute ways to find your center. There are techniques and thoughts and activities that will give you more of a cognitive understanding. However, this post is about becoming more connected to what you are doing. You are probably already doing certain things unconsciously and hopefully this will bring attention and pique your curiosity to reflect on “how YOU are doing YOU!” It is all an individual process. I am posing these questions to help you think about and bring awareness to how you find connection within yourself.
Life is but a dream so why not “Dream on” while you wake up from the dream state of unconscious behaviors and bring consciousness to your everyday existence.
Lyrics to “Dream On ~~
Every time I look in the mirror
All these lines on my face getting clearer
The past is gone
It went by like dusk to dawn
Isn’t that the way?
Everybody’s got their dues in life to pay
Yeah, I know nobody knows
Where it comes and where it goes
I know it’s everybody’s sin
You got to lose to know how to win
Half my life’s in books’ written pages
Live and learn from fools and from sages
You know it’s true
All the things come back to you
Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
Sing with me if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away
Yeah, sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
Sing with me if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away
Dream on, dream on, dream on,
Dream yourself a dream come true
Dream on, dream on, dream on,
Dream until your dreams come true
Dream on, dream on, dream on,
Dream on, dream on,
Dream on, dream on, ah
Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
Sing with me if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away
Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
Sing with me just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away…
Thank you. That was a great post. The lyrics spoke to me in this moment.
Thanks Katie! I’m glad you enjoyed this post. Love-
I never read the lyrics to Dream On before, beautiful, as is that picture of the beach! I laughed when you said you woke up with songs in your head, I cannot remember a day when I don’t wake up with a tune in my head. A while back I decided to write down the titles every day but I didn’t keep it up. I never thought about trying to explore the connection between the lyrics and my life, that is a great practice!
Thanks for responding Carol. I love that you also wake up with tunes in your head. I’d be curious now to see if you find that they relate to something you were thinking about. Love-
